Sprint Race

Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro dominated the 12-lap MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix sprint race after overhauling poleman Francesco Bagnaia.

Utilising the turning capabilities of the RS-GP to launch onto the main straight, he was able to draw alongside Bagnaia and outbrake him into Turn 1.

Bagnaia fended off the sister factory Aprilia of Maverick Vinales over the remaining laps to secure runner-up spot by just 0.051s.

Race 2

Aleix Espargaro led a historic Aprilia 1-2 at the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix after the race was red-flagged for a crash which has hospitalised championship leader Francesco Bagnaia.

Five riders were involved in an incident at the first corner before the Italian, who was on pole, lost control of his Ducati and came off his bike.

Brad Binder was then unable to avoid running over Bagnaia’s legs. The race was red-flagged and medics attended to Bagnaia on the track before he was taken away by ambulance.

Earlier, team-mate Enea Bastianini slipped at the first corner, taking out Marco Bezzechi, Johann Zarco, Fabio di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez, before Bagnaia – who leads this year’s title race – crashed at the second.

Ducati team-mate Bastianini will have surgery on his hand and ankle.
