UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced weakening some of the government’s key green commitments in a major policy shift.
This include delaying a ban on the sales of new petrol and diesel cars which was originally proposed for a 2030 ban.
First, the government would push the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars – currently set to come into force in 2030 – back to 2035. The 2030 date has been government policy since 2020.
It is intended to encourage more drivers to choose electric cars, and reduce emissions from vehicles across the UK.
Personally I don’t think this move is not good enough. We need this deadline to be removed entirely as electric cars nowadays are becoming more expensive to buy, harder to run on and longer to charge.
But the most important bit from all of these points is that there down right dangerous! The government should consider encouraging people to purchase hybrid cars as the baseline which the consumer can buy and take it from there.
