A storming run through incredibly wet Cork 20 stages was enough for Frank and Lauren Kelly to claim a two-second modified victory over Daniel McKenna and Andrew Grennan’s similar Ford Escort Mk2.

While Lauren had already wrapped up the Irish Tarmac Modified Co-Drivers title at the Ulster Rally, Frank started Cork’s championship decider knowing he had to beat Damian Toner to clinch drivers’ honours.

Cork 20 crews were thrown into the deep end on stage one when thundering rain showers produced the most demanding conditions for asphalt rallying. Kelly was only focused on one thing, however, and somehow managed to survive the treacherous morning stages with an imperious 11.9-second two-wheel-drive lead.

Meanwhile, Toner was having a tough start to the rally, losing over 50 seconds due to a misfire and misted windscreen.

Rally organisers eventually stopped the event early after stage five due to the severe weather. Kelly’s two-wheel-drive victory and 10th overall finish was more than enough to seal ITRC’s modified title alongside his daughter – an achievement to remember.
