Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy took 10th place at Kenya while Toyota co-driver Aaron Johnston suffered heartbreak at the end of the powerstage.

It was a dramatic, challenging friday for McErlean and his co-driver Eoin Treacy in their Ford Puma Rally1.

They had to stop during stage seven after smelling fumes, but after a quick inspection, it was determined that the spare wheel came loose which broke part of the internal body work.

The car became filled with dust, but McErlean was soon back on the road, goggles strapped on, and got round in one piece. Despite this they lied seventh at the end of the day.

Like Friday, it was another topsy-turvy day. After being forced into fixing a broken steering arm in the opening stage of the day, McErlean was down to 15th.

But the Derry native showed resolve as he set the second fastest time on stage 15 behind fellow M-Sport driver Grégoire Munster.

On Sunday they showed guts and determination to climb up the leaderboad to originally finish in 11th. That would change at the final stage.

For Johnston it was a different story. A dramatic final-stage roll forced his team-mate Takamoto Katsuta to retire from fifth position at Safari Rally Kenya after failing to reach the final time control.

Katsuta appeared to be on course to finish a highly commendable fourth in Kenya before drama struck on the 21st and final stage of the event.

Pushing for Super Sunday points, the Japanese driver lost control of his Toyota GR Yaris which then pitched into a roll with the car coming to a rest on its roof early in the 10.53km Hells Gate Power Stage.

Katsuta and co-driver Aaron Johnston were able to roll the car back onto its wheels and began to continue through the stage. As they reached the final splits, the car began to lose power before crawling across the finish line.
