The Get Jerky Rally North Wales will host the second round of the Fuchs Lubricants British Historic Rally Championship this Saturday [25 March], as series contenders tackle world-class stages in a new look to the popular event.
Moving to its new home in Welshpool, the rally has been able to add new stages on the roster in Dyfnant which complement the more traditional Dyfi forests tests usually found at the event.
Lining up to do battle is a sensational list of BHRC contenders and not only will many of the round one protagonists be bidding for more glory for their championship chase, but some interesting names have thrown their hat into the ring in Wales.
Riponian rally winners Roger Chilman and Patrick Walsh took their maiden BHRC victory in Yorkshire after a close battle for honours saw them take the win by just four seconds from Tom Walster and Chris Ridge.
The top two contenders will be back for more, as will third-placed Adrian Hetherington and Ronan O’Neill but choosing a winner could well be a trickier task this time around.
Three-time British Historic Rally Champion Jason Pritchard is set to tackle his first event of the season, getting match fit for the forthcoming Roger Albert Clark Rally at the end of November. A former winner of Rally North Wales, he and co-driver Phil Clarke will certainly be ones to watch during the day.
The forests will also be echoing to the sound of a myriad of Porsches, as Richard Tuthill makes a shock appearance in the BHRC with a Tuthill Porsche 911. Co-driven by the ultra-experienced Stephane Prevot, Tuthill will contest his first proper event since 2014.
Seb Perez is another to switch to the Porsche 911 after several years in a Ford Escort MKII. He and co-driver Gary McElhinney have been competing in Europe of late, but get back to the gravel in Wales. Joining them will be Steve Perez in Seb’s usual Escort. Steve hasn’t rallied in the UK since 2017 but is another to get an eye in ahead of the RAC.
But there are plenty of on-form contenders lining up to take the fight to the newcomers. The likes of Nick Elliott and Dave Price wheel out their FIAT 131 Abarth and aim to get at least onto a podium after fourth place last time out, whilst Marty McCormack and Barney Mitchell will be aiming to get further than the opening stage, such was their Riponian Rally disappointment.
Regulars Robert Gough and Richard Jordan return for the fight, as does BHRC debutant Mike Stuart and FIA front-runner Rudi Lancaster.
After taking their maiden win in Category 2 [cars between 1968-1975] at the Riponian, a quiet year for Josh Carr and Richard Wardle has turned into a busy one as they head to Wales in the hope of another maximum score in their Ford Escort MKI. Making their debut, Craig Jones and Ian Taylor impressed in Yorkshire and will be gunning for category glory, as will Jeremy Easson and Mike Taylor.
