Carmichael was stepping up from the National section of the competition and competing in the main BRC Class. He won last year courtesy of four perfect scores and a runner-up finish in Yorkshire.

He was treading a similar path to 2021 National champion Garry Pearson and believes the lessons learned aboard his Hyundai i20 R5 should come into their own as the season unfolds.

Joining him once again in the navigator’s seat for the seven-round campaign was Arthur Kierans who in 2014, clinched the British Rally Championship crown with Daniel McKenna.

However after a run of disappointing results he opted back to the National class and instead defend the title he won last season. The Ballymoney man had relied on the older R5 iteration of the Korean supermini – and it has served him well.

However, after some thought, Carmichael concluded that it was time to make the switch to a newer version of the Hyundai i20.

Halfway through the season in the co-drivers seat we seen a change and Claire Williams was calling out the notes for Alan.

In the end it proved to be another rollercoaster of a year for Carmichael. Winning his class in the Trackrod Rally and defending his national title.
