Two Dead Sligo Rally Competitors Named

The two competitors who died after a crash during the Sligo Stages Rally were Daire Maguire (Co-Driver) from County Fermanagh and Gene McDonald (Driver) from County Cavan.

Competing in their MK2 Escort, the collision happened during the sixth stage of the Sligo Stages Rally.

The driver and co-driver both died at the scene and their bodies were brought to Sligo University Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Separate investigations into the crash are being carried out by Gardaí (Irish police) and Motorsport Ireland.

Both experienced rally competitors, they both took part in the Sligo Stages for the first time together as a unit. Sadly it would be the last rally event which both of them would partcipate.

Gardaí have asked that footage of this collision at the Sligo Stages Rally is not shared across social media or messaging applications.

Motorsport Ireland sporting manager Art McCarrick, said it was a “difficult and dark day”.
