Josh McErlean and co-driver Eoin Treacy have won the Midlands Stages Rally by half-a-second from Matt Edwards and Sion Williams after a thrilling day of action.

Leading throughout the day, McErlean following the first loop of three stages with a 1.5 second timeframe covered the top duo who was quickest through the opening stage.

In cold conditions, the second loop continued at pace McErlean led for the majority of the rally in his Ford Fiesta while Matt Edwards just couldn’t close the gap in his Hyundai Rally 2.

On Stage 9 they gave it there all. Both drivers on hot form but McErlean bouncing back from a disappointing Rally Sweden took the win in his Fiesta Rally2 spec car provided by M-Sport in one of the closets rally finishes you will see in recent memory.

Josh Moffett and Keith Moriarty finished in third spot in their Citroen C3 Rally 3.

In the modified class there was another close finish as Johno Doogan claimed a close 2nd in his MK2 Escort and 20th overall getting the better of Barry Morris in the Darrian for third (0.1 seconds separated the pair) as Marty Toner took the class win in the Proton.

The next event in the national rally calendar will be the Circuit of Kerry on March 30th.
